The USS Arizona Memorial, at Pearl Harbor in Honolulu, Hawaii, marks the resting place of 1,102 of the 1,177 sailors and Marines killed on USS Arizona during the Japanese surprise attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941 and commemorates the events of that day.
26 April, 1972 (Pearl Harbor)
Dear Mom, Dad, Sue
We pulled into Pearl Harbor today at 2PM. We leave tomorrow morning. I値l probably go over to see what its like. It looks like we値l be over here a minimum of 7 months. But could be anywhere from 7 to 9 months. So I値l probably do my Christmas shopping over here. I just hope I can make it home for Christmas. I知 going up for 3rd class (E-4) in August. That will be another $30 a month. I should be able to save a little money over here so I can pay the bank in Broken Bow off. I知 going to buy my whole stereo set-up here. Probably a good camera, a watch, and some tailor made clothes. I got some good pictures of the Panama Canal. I値l just wait and bring all of them home with me. Well, its time to go to quarters, I hope I get a letter from you guys today. Write Soon! Love, Frank
On 27 April, two weeks after the initial attack, North Vietnamese forces again battle toward Quang Tri City. The defending South Vietnamese division retreats. By April 29, the NVA takes Dong Ha, and by May 1, Quang Tri City.
