"WMUX"

Good Morning Vietnam!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Stations in Vietnam were initially known by the name "AFRS" (Armed Forces Radio Saigon), but as the number of stations quickly expanded throughout South Vietnam, they became known as "AFVN" (American Forces Vietnam Network) and had several stations, including Qui Nhon, Nha Trang, Pleiku, Da Nang and Hue. Hue was overrun by the NVA in 1968 and replaced by a station in Quang Tri. AFVN's headquarters station was located in Saigon.

A number of local disc jockeys helped make hour-long music programs for broadcast. Perhaps the best-known program became the morning "Dawn Buster" program, (the brainchild of Chief Petty Officer Bryant Arbuckle in 1962) thanks to the popularity of the sign-on slogan "Gooooood Morning, Vietnam" (which was initiated by Adrian Cronauer).

While in Vietnam, Mullinnix did not have access to Armed Forces Radio like many of the ground troops had access to. No Adrian Cronauer. No Pat Sajak. No Wolfman Jack. No Chris Noel.

So...we had to make do. With permission from our CO, James "Boom Boom" Cannon, the crew launched WMUX" Radio on one of the 'channels' not being used officially on the 1MC.

The IC room was the studio, staffed by crew members during their "off" hours. We all would take our vinyl records down to the IC room, and they would develop the evening's playlist. With very spotty mail service and virtually no reading material on board, WMUX was a life saver. Made us feel closer to home.

On 16 March, 2019, a radio show, "Welcome Home", was broadcast on Vietnam Vet Radio (Courtesy of KLWC 1260 AM and Producer Wes Simkins), dedicated to Vietnam Veterans and our music. I was fortunate to be 1 of 7 Vietnam Vets that were interviewed for the show. Below are five .MOV files that are from that show. I managed to put a plug in for WMUX. I hope I made you proud...

The Door's Riders on the Storm (.WAV)

Riders on the storm
Riders on the storm
Into this house we’re born
Into this world we’re thrown
Like a dog without a bone
An actor out on loan
Riders on the storm

There’s a killer on the road
His brain is squirmin’ like a toad
Take a long holiday
Let your children play
If ya give this man a ride
Sweet memory will die
Killer on the road, yeah

Girl ya gotta love your man
Girl ya gotta love your man
Take him by the hand
Make him understand
The world on you depends
Our life will never end
Gotta love your man, yeah

Wow!

Riders on the storm
Riders on the storm
Into this house we’re born
Into this world we’re thrown
Like a dog without a bone
An actor out alone
Riders on the storm

Riders on the storm
Riders on the storm
Riders on the storm
Riders on the storm
Riders on the storm
