USS MULLINNIX DD-944

USS Hoyt S. Vandenberg Sinkex

USS Hoyt S. Vandenberg Sinkex - The beginning of the end...

She’s history, she’s gone – for ever. She is now the world’s second largest man made reef about 6 miles of Key West, Florida. Watch the video (this link may be 'broken'). This is how the Navy does it. Dozens and dozens of ships have been put to rest this way. If you were part of a crew on a ship that ended this way, it is hard to watch. But its better than the scrapper - I guess...

This video was taken of the Vandenberg a couple short weeks before she was sunk
I took it while heading back to our cruise ship, as part of our 2009 Mullinnix Reunion. She looks so peaceful doesn't she?

The following pictures were taken during the 2009 Mullinnix Reunion 'extension'. After the 'official' reunion, about 1/2 of the attendees went on a 'Mexican Cruise' out of New Orleans. Unfortunately, the swine flue scare took the world by storm and instead of heading to Mexico, we found ourselves in Key West, Florda for 'liberty call'.

Click on each picture to enlarge. The pictures have been kept in the orginal size to maximize the beauty of the Key West coast line
